What has changed?There are numerous changes to the 2022 edition of the Code that members should be aware of, including replacement of the entire text with MSC.539(107), changes to existing schedules, twelve new cargo schedules and changes to the Code’s appendix 3.Schedules removed from the code.FISH MEAL (FISH SCRAP), STABILIZED UN 2216 Antioxidant treated.Has been removed and replaced by a new schedule - FISH MEAL (FISH SCRAP), STABILIZED Anti-oxidant treated. The cargo now is not classified as UN2216 as it was previously, however it is still a group B cargo. Therefore, to enable carriage of the cargo the vessel’s DOC will be require as it needs to be specifically listed as a group B cargo.Changes to existing schedules:CELESTINE CONCENTRATEThis has been added as a new Bulk Cargo Shipping Name (BCSN) to the existing schedules for:METAL SULPHIDE CONCENTRATESMETAL SULPHIDE CONCENTRATES, CORROSIVE UN 1759METAL SULPHIDE CONCENTRATES, SELF-HEATING UN 3190MINERAL CONCENTRATESNew Schedules - Group A:BARYTE, FLOTATION CHEMICAL GRADEThis is commonly used in drilling mud as a weighing agent as well as production for all kinds of barium salt products, filler for paint, coating, plastic and rubber. The cargo is dense and therefore it can stress tank top. It is listed in appendix 3 as a non-cohesive cargo. Consists of particles up to 75µm.CRUSHED GRANODIORITE FINESThis provisions of the schedule shall apply only to cargoes containing less than 0.1% respirable quartz.This material is made by blasting, crushing and sieving the rock granodiorite. The aggregate is used as a component in asphalt and concrete. It is used for construction in roads and offshore installations. It is also listed in appendix 3 as a non-cohesive cargo. Consists of particles up to 22mm.Other names commonly used include – AggregatesDUNITE FINESThe provisions of the schedule shall apply only to cargoes containing less than 0.1% respirable silica. The cargo can be stored outside (non-dry) or protected from the environment and declared as dry. It consists of Dunite sand with particle sizes less than 10mm. It is often shipped as a wet material (with up to 6% moisture by weight).Other names it has been shipped under include - Magnesium silicate, Serpentine, Pasektap, Pasekflux and PasekSlagdoorGROUND GRANULATED BLAST FURNACE SLAG POWDERA fine ground powder which is obtained by the physical grinding of granular slag. Used for cement or concrete production. The dust generated is a major concern upon load, the crew will require PPE. The cargo may shift when aerated due to its powdery nature. Other names it is commonly shipped under include - Fine slag powder, water slag powder.MAGNESITE FINESThe cargo usually has a moisture content between 2.5% -4%. Consists of particles up to 3mm.The generated dust a concern for the ships ventilation systems and also for the crew, they will need to be issued PPE during working the cargo.Other names it is commonly shipped under includes: Magnesite MixtureNew Schedules Group A and B:As these cargoes are group B the vessel’s DOC for hazardous cargo will require amendment to enable carriage.ELECTRIC ARC FURNACE DUST, PELLETIZEDAs well as being group A&B the cargo is a material hazardous in bulk (MHB) – Toxic and Corrosive.It is created in the process of melting steel scrap from dust generated in the off-gas from the electric arc furnace. This dust is filtered out collected. Consists of particles up to 20mm.One of the main concerns with this cargo is crew health. It is corrosive to eyes and a skin irritant. Repeated inhalation or ingestion of the dust over long time may cause absorption of lead into the organs potentially leading to lung disease. It may cause zinc fever or metal fume fever which is a kind of poisoning that may occur after intense inhalation of zinc fumes or metal fumes. Symptoms may occur 4-12 hours after exposure such as headache, nausea, sweating, coughing, chest pain, flu-like fever and chills. As such dust must be prevented fro
