Renovations at the Port of Savannah’s Ocean Terminal are now more than 60% complete. Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) is investing US$1.6 billion in the project. Once completed, the upgraded terminal will have an annual container capacity of 1.75 million TEUs. This compares with 200,000 TEUs before the redevelopment. Meanwhile, GPA has completed the terminal’s 2,650-foot berth. The upgraded berth is now ready to handle larger vessels. “Ocean Terminal is a major part of our strategy to prepare Savannah for future growth. The renovated berth is fully completed and ready for big ships,” said Griff Lynch, CEO, Georgia Ports Authority. For now, GPA will continue to handle smaller vessels at Ocean Terminal. The first phase of the renovated container yard is expected to be ready by mid-autumn 2027. The entire yard project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028. Truck gate now fully operational Another part of the project has also reached a key milestone. Ocean Terminal’s truck gate is now fully operational. The gate will feature 12 inbound and six outbound lanes. In addition, GPA has funded a US$29 million overpass. The new infrastructure directs trucks from Ocean Terminal to U.S. 17 and Interstate 16. As a result, departing port traffic can bypass nearby neighbourhood streets. “Transforming a 200-acre terminal while keeping the port operating is a tremendous undertaking, and the progress at Ocean Terminal is a testament to the hard work of our GPA team and our partners,” said Alec Poitevint, Board Chairman, Georgia Ports Authority. Georgia Ports plans further capacity expansion The Ocean Terminal project forms part of GPA’s wider port development strategy. Over the next ten years, Georgia Ports plans to invest US$5 billion in capacity improvements. The programme includes five additional container berths in Savannah. It also includes a new RoRo berth in Brunswick. The post Savannah’s Ocean Terminal renovation passes 60% completion appeared first on Container News .
