Indonesia: AIS mandatory by 20 August 2019 Publications Steamship Mutual Published: September 16, 2019 Contact author Download article pdf     Image All ships sailing in Indonesian territorial waters will be required to install and activate an automatic identification system (AIS) with effect from 20 August 2019. The Director of Navigation of the Directorate General of Sea Transportation at the Ministry of Transportation says the Master will be obliged to activate and provide correct information to AIS. If the AIS is not functioning, the Master will be required to submit this information (i.e. that it is not functioning) to the relevant authority and record the incident appropriately. For Indonesia-flagged vessels, the regulation further differentiates between AIS Class A and Class B. Administrative sanctions may be imposed on vessels for non-compliance, such as suspension of departure approval until the AIS is installed and/or active on the ship. If a Master does not activate AIS during the voyage and does not provide the correct information, an administrative sanction may be in the form of revocation of the certificate of endorsement (COE). Likewise, foreign vessels that do not carry out their obligations will be subject to sanctions in accordance with the Tokyo MOU and its changes.
