Image Credit: NYK Japan ’s shipping firm NYK Line has shared operational experience from its ammonia-fuelled tugboat Sakigake with the IMO . The company presented its experience during the 12th session of the IMO Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers , held in London from September 14-18 , it said in a press release on Friday . Sakigake , operated by Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha , has accumulated two years of commercial operating experience using ammonia since its delivery in August 2024 . At an IMO technical seminar on September 17 , NYK also outlined the safety philosophy and crew-training programmes developed for ammonia-fuelled vessel operations. The company shared operational knowledge gained from Sakigake , including observations on vessel safety, operating practices and challenges associated with ammonia as a marine fuel. NYK also provided an update on an ammonia-fuelled medium gas carrier, which is scheduled for delivery in November . The company said the experience gained from Sakigake would be applied to the development and operation of future oceangoing ammonia-fuelled vessels.
