Image Credit: Maersk The number of dual-fuel container ships and vehicle carriers currently in operation increased 65% year-on-year to 440 vessels as of March 2026 , according to the latest figures from the World Shipping Council (WSC) . Orders for dual-fuel vessels also continued to grow, reaching 764 ships , WSC said in an email statement on Tuesday . According to the WSC, 78% of container ship orders and 94% of vehicle carrier orders are now dual-fuel propulsion compared with 17% across the wider global fleet. In total, 1,204 dual-fuel container ships and vehicle carriers have either been delivered or are on order, representing more than $180 billion in private investment. “These vessels are long-term investments built with flexibility in mind, Joe Kramek , president and CEO of the WSC, said. “Ships built today will operate for decades, and the ability to operate on different fuel pathways helps reduce risk, strengthen energy security, and support more resilient global supply chains.” Kramek said continued engagement at the IMO remains important to provide regulatory certainty needed to support investment in alternative marine fuels.
