Loss Prevention 08 Oct, 2025 New Guidance regarding use of Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS) within Australian Waters Emma Forbes-Gearey Loss Prevention Officer The Australian Maritime Authority has released updated guidance concerning the use of Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS) in Australian waters. Marine Notice 2025/04 now supersedes Marine Notice 2022/12, aligning national regulations with the 0.05% m/m sulphur limit mandated under MARPOL Annex VI and domestic legislation. Download PDF Under the revised notice, vessels are permitted to operate EGCS as an alternative to low-sulphur fuel, in accordance with MARPOL Annex VI and Section 26FEGA of the Protection of the Sea Act 1983. All types of EGCS whether they are hybrid, open or closed loop, must comply with uniform discharge water standards. Discharge is allowed within Australian waters provided it meets the water quality criteria outlined in the IMO Guidelines . This includes sensitive areas such as Australia's Particularly Sensitive Sea Area and regions within MARPOL's 'nearest land' boundary, including the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. However, vessel operators should be aware that individual port authorities may impose restrictions on discharge within port limits. It is therefore advisable to consult the relevant port authority before releasing any discharge water. Regarding sludge and residues generated by EGCS, these must be delivered to port reception facilities. Discharge at sea or onboard incineration is strictly prohibited. The notice also outlines operational requirements and procedures to follow in the event of EGCS malfunction. Any non-compliance with the IMO Guidelines will result in the prohibition of EGCS use in Australian waters.
