Athina Martinou, one of the most prominent figures in Greek shipping for decades, passed away on Friday night at the age of 97 according to an announcement made by the foundation that bears her name. Martinou entered shipping in 1964 and in 1971 she founded the now-shipping giant Thenamaris Ships Management which currently owns almost 300 vessels making her a trailblazer in the male-led Greek shipowning industry. In 1991, after 20 years of spearheading Thenamaris, she handed over the reins to her children. One of her sons, Thanasis Martinos, later left the company and formed Eastern Mediterranean Maritime. Andreas, her second son took a similar route and established the Minerva Marine shipping company while the third son Dinos took over the helm of Thenamaris. The company Martinou founded is now led by Nikolas Martinos, Dinos’ son. Another company created by descendants of the Martinou family was Astra Shipmanagement, founded by brothers Aris and Stefanos Koropoulis.
