The event brought together around 800 participants from IMO member states, industry, academia, NGOs and IGOs, both in person and online, the organisation said in a press release yesterday. Discussions covered developments across the ammonia fuel supply chain, including production, bunkering and infrastructure. Participants also shared updates on ammonia-fuelled engines, emissions control and safety considerations. “The decisions this Organization takes on alternative fuels depend on a clear and shared understanding of what the technology can do today, where the difficulties lie, and what remains unresolved,” David Osborn , Director of the Marine Environment Division at IMO, said. The seminar was organised under IMO’s Future Fuels and Technology Project , a partnership with the Government of the Republic of Korea aimed at supporting the uptake of future fuels and technologies in shipping. It was the fifth technical seminar held under the project, following sessions on onboard carbon capture and storage, shipping’s energy transition, biofuels and methane-based fuels.
