Image for representation purposes only Pakistan has launched an investigation after two foreign vessels collided near the entrance to Karachi Port, damaging a cable-laying vessel and causing containers to fall into the sea. Authorities said no casualties or injuries were reported, and port operations were not affected. The collision occurred on the night of May 28 near the Fairway Buoy outside Karachi Port. According to port authorities, the vessels involved were the Liberia-flagged container ship MV Papu, also referred to in some reports as MV Popo, and the UAE-flagged cable-laying vessel MV Neva, also identified in some reports as MV Niwa. Officials said MV Papu had departed from Karachi Port when it collided with MV Neva, which was waiting to embark a pilot and moving slowly toward the navigation channel. Preliminary findings indicate that one vessel was struck from behind by the other. The impact caused damage to MV Neva and resulted in at least one container from MV Papu falling into the sea. Some reports indicated that multiple containers may have gone overboard. Karachi Port Trust (KPT) Chairman Rear Admiral (retd) Shahid Ahmed confirmed the incident and said authorities were examining how the collision occurred and assessing the damage to both vessels. Initial investigations suggest negligence by the masters of both vessels may have contributed to the accident, according to Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry. The damaged cable-laying vessel was safely brought to port with the assistance of KPT tugboats after the collision left it disabled. Port officials said repairs could be carried out at Karachi Shipyard. Authorities said the Mercantile Marine Department and Karachi Port Trust are conducting a joint investigation. Insurance representatives will also take part in the inquiry to determine the cause of the accident and assess the extent of the damage.
