Hapag-Lloyd’s planned US$4.2 billion acquisition of ZIM is increasingly about more than adding another container carrier to its fleet. The transaction would strengthen Hapag-Lloyd’s scale, expand its network in areas where ZIM has a strong presence and potentially generate US$300 million to US$500 million in annual synergies.
