Image Credit: LR Lloyd's Register (LR) has joined South Korea's HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in a project to develop LNG carrier designs featuring hybrid-electric propulsion. The companies signed a joint development project agreement at Posidonia 2026 to advance the design of an 185,000 m3 LNG carrier equipped with a hybrid-electric propulsion system, LR said in an email update on Wednesday . The project will focus on the development and safety verification of the propulsion system, including battery integration, system architecture and redundancy arrangements. The partners also aim to establish technical guidance and requirements to support wider adoption of the technology. "Hybrid electric propulsion has clear potential to support efficiency gains and emissions reduction, but its application at this scale requires a robust approach to design and safety," Sung-Gu Park , President – North East Asia at LR, said. The partners said the project could also support future developments involving fuel cells and other advanced vessel technologies.
