MMI Daily Iron Ore Index Report January 26 2026 in Chinese iron ore and steelmaking prices 26/01/2026 Today, Dalian iron ore futures trended weakly. The benchmark contract I2605 ultimately closed at 784.5 RMB/tonne, representing a decline of 0.95% from the previous trading day. In the physical market, prices dropped by approximately 2–7 RMB/tonne. Traders displayed average enthusiasm for quoting, predominantly adopting a ‘followthe-market’ strategy. Steel mills focused on procurement based on rigid demand; while inquiries were frequent, the overall transaction atmosphere remained mediocre. Regarding fundamental data, SMM shipping tracking indicates that total global iron ore shipments last week stood at 29.84 million tonnes, a marginal week-on-week increase of 310,000 tonnes (+1%). Specifically, shipments from Australia and other non-mainstream origins declined slightly, whereas Brazilian shipments rebounded. Simultaneously, total arrivals at Chinese ports reached 27.41 million tonnes, an increase of 730,000 tonnes (+2.7%). On the fundamental front, supply-side data reveals that port inventories in China have reached a three-year high, with no distinct inflection point in the accumulation trend; consequently, oversupply pressure continues to mount. On the demand side, although the pre-Lunar New Year restocking window has opened, steel mill procurement strategies are concentrated on varieties with ample inventory. There is a distinct lack of acceptance for high-priced resources, meaning restocking activity has failed to form strong support for overall ore prices. In summary, iron ore prices are projected to maintain a pattern of sideways oscillation with a weak bias in the short term.
