US Natural Gas Stocks Fall More than Expected in General Energy News 23/01/2026 US energy firms withdrew 120 billion cubic feet of natural gas from storage in the week ended January 16, 2026, slightly more than expected. Stockpiles fell to 3.065 trillion cubic feet, about 4.8% above levels a year earlier and roughly 6.1% above the five-year average for the period. The withdrawal was well below the 228 bcf draw recorded in the same week last year and the five-year average draw of 191 bcf, as warmer-than-normal weather limited heating demand. In the prior week ended January 9, utilities withdrew 71 bcf from storage. Attention has now shifted to the next storage report, with expectations that withdrawals will surge as this weekend’s frigid weather drives a sharp increase in heating demand, potentially leading to one of the largest weekly draws on record.
