Authorities have not said who was behind the attack or whether the tanker suffered any damage. Tensions between the United States and Iran have raised concerns over the safety of commercial shipping in the Gulf. The Forward Seamen’s Union of India, which represents Indian maritime workers, said the tanker was hit by an unknown missile near the Strait of Hormuz while sailing toward the Persian Gulf. The Strait of Hormuz, between Iran and Oman, is one of the world’s most important shipping routes. Before the latest escalation in regional tensions, about one-fifth of global energy supplies passed through the waterway, making it a key route for oil and LPG shipments.
