Image Credit: Port of Barcelona The Port of Barcelona and Shanghai port authorities have signed a new agreement to expand cooperation on alternative marine fuels. The deal also strengthens collaboration on green ports, digitalisation and sustainable shipping links between Asia and Europe. The agreement was signed by the Port of Barcelona , the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission  and Shanghai International Port Group during a visit by an institutional and business delegation from Shanghai . The deal formally establishes a sister-port relationship between Barcelona and Shanghai . It covers cooperation in areas including alternative marine fuels, port security, digitalisation, intermodal transport and the development of sustainable maritime corridors. The agreement builds on cooperation between the two ports in recent years. In J uly 2025, they signed a preliminary agreement that was followed by a visit from a Shanghai delegation in September 2025 to advance plans for a Green Shipping and Digital Corridor linking the Far East and the Mediterranean. Barcelona said the new agreement strengthens its position as a Euro-Mediterranean logistics hub while deepening ties with one of the world's largest ports and economic centres.
