The issue dates back to a 2019 marine casualty involving a towing vessel, which led the USCG to issue Marine Safety Alert 13-19 on the hazards associated with retractable pilothouses. The USCG is now providing additional clarification on how existing regulations under 46 CFR Subchapter M apply to these systems.
