News and publications NewsUpdate: Joint War Committee amends Listed Areas, including Saudi ArabiaPublished: 3 August 2026NewsSaudi ArabiaWar riskThe Joint War Committee (JWC) published circular JWLA-034 on 29 July 2026, amending the Listed Areas for Hull War, Piracy, Terrorism and Related Perils. The changes primarily concern Saudi Arabia and the broader area around the Persian/Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Indian Ocean, Gulf of Aden, and southern Red Sea. The change regarding Saudi Arabia consists of two parts. Saudi Arabia was previously listed as two separate areas: “Saudi Arabia (Gulf coast)” and “Saudi Arabia (Red Sea coast) excluding transits.” This meant that a vessel merely transiting along the Red Sea coast, without calling at a port there, could remain outside the designated area. In this new circular, that distinction has been removed. The northwest boundary of the wider Gulf/Red Sea area has been moved from south of latitude 18°N to south of latitude 25.5°N, meaning a considerably larger portion of Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast now falls within the designated area. In addition to the changes concerning Saudi Arabia, the new circular adds the whole of Eritrea and removes Pakistan from the list. For our members, this means that a transit through the Saudi Red Sea now counts as a transit through the Listed Area, which was not previously the case. As a result, these voyages must now also be reported for our worldwide K&R cover, and additional war risk cover will be required.
