Israel, Lebanon agree to ceasefire, contingent on Hezbollah withdrawal in World Economy News 05/06/2026 The U.S. said on Wednesday evening that Israel and Lebanon had agreed to implement a ceasefire deal, although the deal depends on Hezbollah halting its hostilities. The U.S. Department of State said in a joint statement with Israel and Lebanon that the two countries had agreed to implement the ceasefire after a fourth round of trilateral talks. But the ceasefire is contingent on Hezbollah agreeing to wind down hostilities and exit from South Lebanon. But violence between the two countries had continued, especially as Israel kept up attacks on Hezbollah, sparking retaliation by the Iran-backed group. Iran has said it will not agree to any peace deals with the U.S. and Israel unless Lebanon is also covered by a ceasefire.
