Greek owner Danaos has confirmed adding five newbuild containerships to its orderbook worth nearly $510m. The John Coustas-led boxship tonnage provider and capsize bulker player has contracted four 9,200 teu ships at China’s state-run Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co (DSIC), verifying most recent broker reports, but also revealed adding another 8,258 teu vessel to its newbuilding series at Yangzijiang shipyard. The newbuilds, which will be methanol-ready, should be delivered in 2027 and 2028 for a total of $509m. The vessels are backed by $413m charter deals with an average duration of 4.8 years, the company said. Danaos took delivery of two 8,010 teu vessels and one 7,165 teu vessel during the second quarter of 2024. Following the latest newbuilding deals, the company’s orderbook stands at 16 ships with an aggregate capacity of 129,819 teu.
