Image Credit: Ulstein PaxOcean Group and Ulstein Design & Solutions have signed a contract to design a service operation vessel (SOV) for NYK Line suitable for conversion to methanol propulsion. PaxOcean, part of Kuok Maritime Group , will construct the vessel at its Graha yard in Batam , Indonesia, based on Ulstein’s SX222 design, Ulstein said in an announcement on Friday . The 89.6 m vessel will support offshore wind construction, operations and maintenance, while providing accommodation and logistical support for personnel working offshore. It will have a beam of 19.2 m and accommodation for up to 120 people . The SOV will feature Ulstein’s TWIN X-STERN hull design, which is intended to improve manoeuvrability and station-keeping while reducing energy consumption. The symmetrical hull and propulsion arrangement allow the vessel to operate efficiently in either direction, reducing the need to turn when weather conditions change. The vessel will be prepared for methanol and fully electric operations, giving it flexibility to use lower-emission energy solutions in the future.
