Lithuania’s State Energy Regulatory Council (VERT) has set a new date for the second offshore wind auction in the Baltic Sea after the first attempt fell through in April due to a lack of interest. The repeated tender for the 700MW wind farm in the Baltic Sea is planned to be announced on November 18 with the winners named in June next year. After the announcement of the competition, participants will have 120 days to submit the offers – until March 18 – of the following year, then on April 15, 2025, VERT will announce a list of qualified bidders. Lithuania plans to have two offshore wind farms with a combined capacity of 1.4GW. According to government estimates, the two wind farms would provide about half of the country’s electricity demand. The country’s first auction for an offshore wind project was held last year with a joint venture between Ocean Winds and Ignitis Renewables coming out as the winner. The tender for the second offshore wind farm saw the state-owned Ignis Group participate again as the sole bidder for the 700MW wind farm but at least two bidders had to participate for the tender to be considered successful. For the second attempt, however, the Lithuanian government changed the conditions for the tender so that it would be valid with only one bidder participating, instead of two, as previously required. Lithuania has already set a target to source its electricity exclusively from local renewable energy sources by 2030.
