The core objective of BS 5609:2024 is to ensure that hazard and handling information remains firmly adhered and clearly legible following prolonged saltwater immersion and environmental exposure representative of conditions encountered in maritime transport. Despite the safeguards commonly put in place by modern shipping networks, such as advanced technology and satellite tracking, the ocean still claims the occasional piece of cargo. Out of the estimated 200 million container movements annually, only a very small proportion fail to reach their destination, but when they do, ecosystems, public safety and reputations can be placed at risk. The ideal scenario for the retrieval of overboard containers involves rapid notification of cargo loss, followed by swift geographic identification and coordinated retrieval efforts. However, severe weather events, a common catalyst for cargo loss, often complicate recovery efforts. Strong winds and surface currents may quickly disperse drifting units, moving them significant distances from the point of origin and increasing the operational challenge of retrieval.
