The Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative (MAMII), whose members include some of the biggest backers of LNG as a fuel, has come up with some pointers on how the industry can make the fossil fuel more green. The group, which includes the likes of Shell, Mediterranean Shipping Co and cruise giant Carnival among its membership, has issued a new report, calling for universal methane measurement standards and regulatory frameworks to drive adoption of technologies reducing methane emissions from ships. Methane slip from ships using LNG as a fuel has been making many headlines in recent years with campaigners urging for other fuels to take primacy, something that has made many owners have pause for thought before committing to further gas-powered newbuilds. Panos Mitrou, chairman of MAMII, stated: “From better engine combustion, to the abatement or catalysis of harmful gases and the blending of hydrogen with traditional fuels, the range and potential of these technologies have exceeded our expectations. It’s clear that with informed and early decision-making, we have the tools to abate methane.” Mitrou argued that without a universally accepted certification method or regulatory framework providing business-critical incentives, the progress and adoption of these technologies will face significant delays. The 26-page report, the first from MAMII, details the first two years of the group’s activities, including trials of various technologies to reduce methane slip.
