Japan’s Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), Singapore’s Golden Island and Norway’s Yara Clean Ammonia have taken a step toward bringing ammonia fuel to the world’s busiest bunkering hub. The three parties have signed a non-binding term sheet to explore the joint marketing and supply of low-carbon ammonia as a marine fuel in Singapore. The move targets the development of a new fuel supply chain in the Lion Republic, where roughly a fifth of global bunker demand is supplied. The partners said the tie-up combines operational, commercial and production know-how. NYK will lean on its experience in LNG bunkering and ammonia shipping projects, while Golden Island brings four decades of local bunkering expertise and customer reach. Yara Clean Ammonia adds upstream strength in ammonia production, logistics and handling. The companies began discussions in early 2024 and are aiming to launch operations within this decade, subject to further agreements. Atsuya Nojiri, managing director at NYK Bulkship (Asia), said ammonia is expected to play a key role in cutting emissions and that the group is focused on building the infrastructure needed to support its uptake. Ammonia is seen as a potential zero- or near-zero-emission fuel as it does not emit CO₂ during combustion, though challenges around safety, handling and infrastructure remain. For Singapore, the initiative fits into a broader push to position itself as a hub for next-generation marine fuels, as the industry works toward decarbonisation targets. That push is already gathering pace.
