Hanwha Ocean wins 507.4b won deal for three mega ammonia carriers in Shipbuilding News 05/05/2026 Hanwha Ocean said on the 4th that it won an order worth 507.4 billion won in total to build three very large ammonia carriers (VLAC) from a shipowner in Africa. Hanwha Ocean said it is actively responding to growing demand for ships based on eco-friendly fuels, having won orders for a total of 10 ammonia carriers to date, including this contract. Hanwha Ocean has been continuing technology development to build zero-carbon ships, including obtaining approval in principle (AIP) for an ammonia carrier in 2022 from Bureau Veritas (BV) and Lloyd’s Register (LR). Last year, it began developing a 150,000 CBM (㎥) very large ammonia carrier with the Korean Register (KR). Hanwha Ocean has booked orders so far this year for a total of 18 ships—10 very large crude carriers (VLCC), four liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, three VLACs, and one wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV)—worth $3.2 billion.
