ClassNK has released Edition 2.0 of its Guidelines for Additional Fire-fighting Measures for Container Carrier, incorporating operational experience and the latest industry developments to strengthen fire safety on container vessels. The updated guidelines provide criteria for evaluating fire-fighting measures that go beyond the mandatory requirements of international conventions and regulations. ClassNK said compliance with the guidelines enables shipowners and operators to demonstrate the implementation of enhanced fire safety measures through dedicated class notations. The revision reflects feedback from shipowners and shipbuilders, discussions at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and experience gained from ships in operation since the guidelines were first introduced in April 2023. Among the key changes, Edition 2.0 introduces guidance on the installation of fire hydrants on lashing bridges to support faster firefighting operations. It also includes measures for video monitoring systems to improve the early detection of fires in weather deck cargo areas. ClassNK has also revised equipment specifications to better reflect operational conditions and cost-effectiveness. The required number of monitoring cameras has been reduced from eight to two, while the role of portable infrared thermographic cameras has been clarified for firefighting operations and fire patrols. The classification society said it will continue to develop guidelines and certification services to support further improvements in maritime transportation safety.
