Greek owner Carlova Maritime is stepping up its tanker push, doubling its VLCC exposure in South Korea while branching into China for an aframax newbuild. The Athens-based company, led by Anthony Inglessis, has ordered a second 300,000 dwt VLCC at Hanwha Ocean. The vessel is slated for delivery in the third quarter of 2029. Carlova already has a sister ship on order at the yard, due for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2027, taking its VLCC tally to two units. Alongside the Korean deal, the owner has secured an early construction slot at Hengli Heavy Industries in China for a 114,000 dwt aframax tanker. The vessel is expected to deliver in the second quarter of 2028. The Inglessis family has traditionally built ships in Japan, but Carlova is now spreading its newbuilding programme across leading yards in South Korea and China. Carlova Maritime was launched last year as the successor to Samos Steamship, a historic name dating back to 1911. Anthony Inglessis now heads Carlova, while John Inglessis has gone on to lead a separate venture, JHI Steamship.
