APM Terminals is preparing to reduce rail handling capacity at its Maasvlakte II terminal in Rotterdam as expansion and testing works continue at the facility. The temporary changes will affect operations between the rail area and the terminal yard, with rail capacity expected to be reduced by approximately 40% from July 1, 2026 until around June 2027. During the construction period, rail handling activities will primarily take place during off-peak hours, between 19:00 and 05:00 on weekdays, as well as throughout weekends. The terminal will also introduce fixed, pre-agreed time slots aimed at improving operational predictability. However, customers may face reduced flexibility and longer lead times as capacity constraints take effect. According to the terminal operator, priority will be given to larger trains, while alternative transport modes or loading ports may be considered for selected shipments on a case-by-case basis. Customers have been advised to plan rail shipments through Maasvlakte II as early as possible to minimize potential disruptions during the expansion programme.
