Red Sea Diversion Tracker: Containership Transits Slow Down in International Shipping News 05/06/2026 Rise in containership transits via Suez loses steam again. The number of containerships sailing via the Suez Canal totalled 20 in the week ended 24 May and 26 in the week ended 31 May, according to the Drewry Red Sea Diversion Tracker. Therefore, in the 2-week period ended 31 May, 46 containerships transited through Suez, down 15% down from the previous fortnight but higher than in the weeks which followed the start of the Iran conflict. In the week ended 31 May, CMA CGM (7 ships) and MSC (2 ships) were the only carriers to send ships of more than 8,000teu via the Suez Canal. Meanwhile, the number of vessels sailing around the Cape of Good Hope continues to total about 190-200 per week. The Cape of Good Hope still remains the dominant route to connect Asia and Europe, keeping many more ships utilised on this route than when most Asia-Europe services sailed via the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. In Drewry’s view, this continued routing will absorb significant capacity for the foreseeable future. Drewry provides updated forecasts of container traffic demand, bunker prices and freight rates in the March 2026 Drewry Container Forecaster, including rational scenarios to consider in planning.
