Overside work includes any task performed on or over a ship’s side, such as maintenance or painting. Although often routine, it carries a high risk of falling overboard, making it one of the most dangerous shipboard activities. Whenever possible, overside work should be avoided, but if necessary it must be carefully planned, authorised through the Permit-to-Work system, and carried out by trained personnel using proper fall-protection and rescue equipment.
