AET has moved to strengthen its shuttle tanker platform with an order for its first hybrid electric newbuild, adding another lower-emissions option to its fleet. The Singapore-based tanker arm of Malaysia’s MISC has contracted Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corp for the construction of a 154,000 dwt unit, scheduled for delivery in 2028. Financial terms have not been disclosed. The vessel will be fitted with an electric energy storage system and designed to be dual-fuel ethanol-ready, the company said. AET is already one of the world’s largest shuttle tanker operators, with 17 DP shuttle tankers deployed across Brazil and Norway, and further expansion planned. The company has focused heavily on dual-fuel tonnage across its fleet, and the latest order adds hybrid propulsion to its technology mix. Nick Potter, president and chief executive of AET, said the investment reflects the owner’s strategy of combining operational experience with new propulsion solutions to support offshore energy production. “AET owns and operates one of the youngest and largest DP shuttle tanker fleets serving Brazil, and the North and Barents seas,” Potter said. “Our ambition is to continue extending our industry-leading position while delivering reliable, safe and more sustainable shuttle tanker solutions.” The newbuild forms part of AET’s wider fleet renewal and energy transition programme, which is aimed at giving greater fuel flexibility as emissions regulations tighten and alternative fuels mature.
