Image Credit: LR The UK -flagged research vessel Prince Madog has received certification from Lloyd's Register (LR) for its hydrogen fuel cell retrofit project. The certification covers the vessel's hydrogen storage system and the integration of fuel cells, batteries and associated equipment, LR said in an email statement on Wednesday . The project is being delivered by UK-based vessel owner and engineering company O.S. Energy in partnership with hydrogen propulsion specialist Ecomar Propulsion . “This significant milestone reflects the hard work and dedication of the entire project team over the last 3 years, Oliver Cornforth , Head of Projects at O.S. Energy, said. “We now look forward to completing the Hydrogen-Battery retrofit and demonstrating the zero-emission operation of the Prince Madog.” The project was launched in 2023 and the conversion was valued at £5.5 million . The certification follows an earlier approval in principle from Lloyd's Register and was presented at Seaworks 2026 in Southampton . O.S. Energy said the project is expected to result in the first seagoing, crewed hydrogen vessel retrofit of its kind and will demonstrate zero-emission vessel operations once completed.
