Image Credit: A.P Moller-Maersk A dual-fuel methanol container ship operated by shipping firm A.P Moller-Maersk has bunkered 100% ethanol in Rotterdam . The firm’s feeder container ship, Laura Maersk , took on ethanol for the second time, the company said in a LinkedIn post on Friday . The ethanol was delivered to the ship using a barge. While Maersk did not disclose the volume supplied, the company described the operation as a larger-scale ethanol delivery carried out by barge. “The bunkering, which took place in Rotterdam , involved larger‑scale delivery by barge, allowing us to test operational handling, supply chains and procedures closer to real‑world conditions than in earlier, smaller‑scale trials,” it said. Laura Maersk had previously bunkered ethanol-methanol blends containing 10% and 50% ethanol before taking on 100% ethanol for the first time in the first quarter of this year . Ethanol is increasingly being viewed as a viable alternative marine fuel alongside methanol. Because the two alcohols share similar chemical properties, ethanol can be stored in the same tanks, blended in any ratio and used with the same bunkering infrastructure, requiring only minor software and injection valve modifications to existing methanol dual-fuel engines.   Ship & Bunker News Team To contact the editor responsible for this story email us
