French energy major TotalEnergies has formally announced the full restart of the Mozambique LNG project. The move follows the decision from November 7 last year to lift the force majeure declared in 2021 amid the Cabo Delgado insurgency. Construction resumes offshore and onshore, with over 4,000 workers currently mobilised, including over 3,000 Mozambicans. The project is 40% complete, with the first LNG targeted for 2029. Engineering and main equipment procurement were advanced during the pause. The $20bn project promises 7,000 direct Mozambican jobs during construction and over $4bn in local contracts. The Mozambique LNG Foundation, with a $200m endowment, has already created 8,000 jobs and supported 7,000 farmers and fishermen in Cabo Delgado. “The full restart marks a major milestone. We are now working together to make this project a great success for the people of Mozambique. This landmark project will also position Mozambique as a major LNG exporter,” said Patrick Pouyanné, chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies. “The project will have a direct and significant impact on job creation, consolidating Mozambique’s positioning as a regional energy hub, and reaffirms the country as a credible and relevant actor in the global LNG market,” added Daniel Chapo, president of the Republic of Mozambique. The Mozambique LNG project began with the discovery of a vast natural gas reserve off Mozambique’s north coast in 2010 and culminated in a final investment decision in 2019. TotalEnergies plans for approximately 65 tcf of recoverable natural gas, including the construction of two liquefaction units with a capacity of 13 mtpa, with expansion capacity of up to 43 mtpa. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1_95_0_1_2'); }); TagsFrance Mozambique
