In this article, I wish to challenge three beliefs about maritime technology that we rarely think to question.Give the captain back his ship Somewhere along the way, we quietly demoted the captain. Not officially. Not ceremonially. Not in title. But operationally. Today, on many bridges, the captain is no longer truly navigating; he is supervising layers of automation, validating algorithmic suggestions, confirming compliance alerts, and acknowledging system prompts. The captain has become the final checkbox in a digital workflow. A highly qualified executor of machine recommendations. But the captain was never meant to be an operator of systems. He was meant to command uncertainty.Technology should not replace seamanship; it should amplify judgment. Too often, systems are designed to instruct rather than inform. They push conclusions instead of presenting reasoning. They narrow decision space instead of expanding it. If we continue like this, we will not create better captains. The practical question is not: “How do we automate more?” but: “How do we design systems that return decision authority to the human?” That means:• Build AI and interfaces that show reasoning, not just conclusions.• Design AI that presents options with consequences, not instructions.• Bridge systems to reduce administrative noise so the captain can focus on situational awareness.• Training that strengthens decision-making under ambiguity, not just software management. If we design digital bridges where the human is central, not peripheral, we restore competence, accountability, and most of all pride. The goal is not autonomous ships. The goal is augmented captains. Give the captain back his ship and you give the vessel back its resilience. The silent AI stowaways Today, there is something else boarding our vessels silently. Not pirates. Not auditors. Not regulators. But invisible passengers: screens. Connectivity was supposed to solve isolation at sea. And in many ways, it did. Families are closer. Access to information is better. High-speed connectivity, streaming platforms, and personal connected devices. All positive developments.But they have unintentionally reshaped social life onboard. The more connected we become globally, the more fragmented we risk becoming locally. Crews retreat to cabins. Messroom conversations shrink. We replaced storytelling with streaming. We have increased bandwidth but reduced bonding. And at the same time, we observe more mental health incidents, more anxiety, more isolation. These are the AI stowaways: Unintended consequences of well-meaning progress. We talk about digital transformation and rarely about digital loneliness. The solution is not to remove connectivity. That would be naïve. The solution is intentional culture. • Make sure leadership protects and actively defends communal time (from operational pressures) • Train captains not only in navigation, but in building social cohesion• Issue digital wellbeing policies not as restrictions, but as guidance We need to treat mental resilience as seriously as hull cleaning.
