South Korea’s Hyundai Glovis has commissioned China’s Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) to build more ultra-large car carriers. The shipping and logistics unit of Hyundai Kia Automotive Group is adding six LNG dual-fuel 10,800 ceu vessels to the CSSC-affiliated yard’s project backlog following HMM’s order last year for a similar sextet against Hyundai Glovis charters. The ships are the largest on-order car carriers to date. Seoul-based Hyundai Glovis revealed plans earlier this year to spend around $750m on six car carrier newbuilds for delivery in 2028. The company is looking to grow its owned and chartered fleet to about 110 car carriers by 2027, which is in addition to HMM newbuilds, set to be boosted by more chartered-in 10,800 ceu vessels tonnage provider Seaspan ordered at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding. Seaspan has six of these ships on order after adding two more units and novating contracts for four of the eight newbuilds that it previously held.
