The Collapse in Container Rates | Closures on Ohio River | Labor Strikes | Offshore Wind | COVID Class Action Against Princess Cruise
What's Going on With Shipping?
October 13, 2022
In this episode, Sal Mercogliano - maritime historian at Campbell University and former merchant mariner - discusses the top 5 maritime stories as of October 13, 2022. First, we look at the plummeting rates for ocean containers, especially across the trans-Pacific. Yet, the container lines are reporting near-record profits while East and Gulf coast ports are still bringing large quantities of containers. Second, while the Mississippi has reopened below Memphis, now closures on the Ohio River are impacting inland water traffic in the US. Third, strikes in Liverpool and Durban are causing disruptions along the supply chain, with lingering issues on the west coast of the US and class I railroads. Fourth, the proliferation of wind power is taking shape in Europe, and finally a class action suit is brought against Princess Cruise Line for the COVID outbreak at the start of the pandemic.
