IMO MARITIME SAFETY COMMITTEE UPDATE 111 Published: 9 June 2026 The IMO recently hosted the 111 th session of the MSC from 13 to 22 May 2026. During this session, several amendments were adopted, and the text of further amendments and circulars were approved. Key highlights include: Adopted the non-mandatory Maritime Autonomous Surface Ship (MASS) Code, entering effect from 1 July 2026. An experience building phase will now begin and continued work will take place to develop a mandatory code with a target of entering force in 2032. Adopted amendment 43-26 of the IMDG Code with entry into force from 1 January 2028, along with possible early adoption from 1 January 2027. Adopted amendments to the International Code on the Enhanced Programme of Inspections During Surveys of Bulk Carriers and Oil Tankers (ESP Code), principally to include the use of Remote Inspection Techniques, entering into force on 1 January 2028. Adopted amendment to the International Code of Safety for Ships Carrying Industrial Personnel (IP Code) in relation to the assumed mass of personnel for stability requirements. The assumed mass will now increase to 90kg per person for newbuild ships from 1 January 2028. Approved interim seafarer training guidelines for the use of methyl/ethyl alcohol and ammonia as fuel. In addition, interim guidelines were approved for the use of Ammonia cargo as fuel, and interim guidelines on the safety of Hydrogen as a fuel.
