Image for representation purposes only Iran is getting around 1.5 to 2 million U.S dollars from each commercial vessel passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a semi-official Iranian news agency reported on Sunday. The news outlet cited Mohsen Zanganeh, a member of the Iranian parliament’s planning and budget committee, who provided the figure. According to local media outlets, Iran has begun to implement its strategy aimed at collecting service fees from ships wanting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint which handles one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas shipments. The plan will be implemented with the cooperation of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance under the supervision of the Supreme National Security Council. The service fees from ships will be deposited into the country’s treasury and spent for designated purposes for the betterment of the people, the media reports mentioned. It has also been revealed that the payments are being made in the form of Tether (USDT), a cryptocurrency stablecoin, and goods or through barter. Ahmadreza Lahijanzadeh, deputy head of Iran’s Department of Environment for marine and wetlands affairs, said on Sunday that the tolls would be collected for environmental services in the Strait. The move aims to organise the maritime services and develop the legal and environmental frameworks related to the ship crossings through the Strait of Hormuz, under conditions set by Iran and Oman, which share borders with the Strait. Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping traffic on February 28, 2026, after the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on the Islamic Republic, sparking the conflict, which entered its 100th day on Sunday. The U.S also imposed a naval blockade of the Strait, preventing ships from entering or leavi
