Dry Bulk Market: Indonesian Coal Exports Retreating in Dry Bulk Market , Hellenic Shipping News 06/06/2026 S eaborne coal exports from Indonesia have been falling so far in 2026. In its latest weekly report, shipbroker Banchero Costa said that “in Jan-Apr 2026, global seaborne coal loadings declined by -0.1% y-o-y to 410.7 mln t (excluding cabotage), based on vessel tracking data from AXS Marine. In Jan-Apr 2026, exports from Indonesia declined by -4.8% y-o-y to 145.5 mln tonnes, whilst from Australia were up by +4.1% y-o-y to 107.1 mln t. From Russia exports increased by +3.4% y-o-y to 55.6 mln t in Jan-Apr 2026, from the USA increased by +6.9% y-o-y to 28.4 mln t, from South Africa by +5.1% y-o-y to 23.0 mln t. Shipments from Colombia were up by +10.0% y-o-y to 17.2 mln t in JanApr 2026, from Canada down by -4.0% y-o-y to 14.8 mln t, and from Mozambique down by -9.1% y-o-y to 5.7 mln t”. Source: Banchero Costa According to Banchero Costa, “seaborne coal imports into Mainland China declined by -14.9% y-o-y to 99.4 mln t in Jan-Apr 2026. Imports to India declined by -5.0% yo-y to 74.8 mln t, to Japan increased by +2.8% y-o-y to 53.1 mln t in JanApr 2026, to South Korea up by +19.3% y-o-y to 37.5 mln t. To the EU imports were down by -6.7% y-o-y to 20.2 mln tonnes in Jan-Apr 2026, whilst to Vietnam volumes increased by +0.7% y-o-y to 23.1 mln tonnes. Imports to Malaysia declined by -3.6% y-o-y to 12.2 mln t, and to Bangladesh up by +10.0% y-o-y to 6.2 mln t. Indonesia is the world’s largest seaborne exporter of coal, accounting for 35.4% of the global seaborne coal market so far in 2026”. “Export volumes from Indonesia were relatively depressed during 2020 and 2021, due to disruption from Covid19 and from government policies favouring domestic consumption, but bounced back to an all-time record high in 2022, and continued to grow further in 2023.
