Maersk has announced updated fuel surcharges for inland transportation services in Spain, Portugal and France. The temporary surcharges will apply from 3 to 9 August 2026. Maersk attributed the measure to rising fuel costs linked to the current situation in the Middle East. During this period, the carrier will review the fuel surcharge every week instead of following its usual monthly process. Maersk will publish updated rates every Thursday, while no adjustment trigger will apply. The surcharges will appear on invoices as EFS for Export Fuel Surcharge and IFS for Import Fuel Surcharge. The following rates will apply between 3 and 9 August: Country Transport mode Fuel surcharge Spain Truck 11.25% Spain Combined rail 2.82% Portugal Truck 11.9% Portugal Rail 11.9% Portugal Combined rail 11.9% France Truck 7.2% France Combined rail 3.2% France Barge and combined barge 15.5% Maersk said it will continue to assess the situation separately in each country. Therefore, further changes or increases may follow as fuel costs and market conditions develop. Price calculation dates For non-FMC shipments, the price calculation date will be the estimated departure time of the first vessel shown in the latest booking confirmation issued at the customer’s request. For FMC-regulated shipments, the calculation date will be when Maersk or one of its authorised agents takes possession of the final container listed on the transport document. The surcharges will apply to FMC shipments from 3 September 2026. FMC-regulated trades include shipments entering or leaving ports in the United States, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa and Puerto Rico. For import shipments where the inland leg is booked after the cargo has departed from its origin, the applicable rate will be based on the date the import shipment is created.
