File Image / Pixabay Norway is introducing requirements for companies operating on the Norwegian continental shelf to reduce GHG emissions from offshore vessels from 2029 . Under the new rules, operators must reduce the GHG intensity of vessels used in offshore oil and gas operations by 10% during 2029-2031 , with the requirement gradually tightening to 40% by 2038-2040 , the Norwegian government said in an announcement on Tuesday . Vessels operating on the Norwegian continental shelf for less than 30 days during a compliance period will be excluded from the requirement. The government said the regulations are expected to deliver total emissions cuts of about 1.6 million mt of CO2-equivalent by 2040 . Norway said the measures are designed to encourage the uptake of low- and zero-emission technologies, including electric and hybrid propulsion systems as well as alternative marine fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia. Marine biofuels, however, will not count towards compliance under the scheme. The government said that the market is already facing a limited supply of biofuels The rules apply collectively across all vessels used by an operator over a three-year compliance period, with companies allowed to cooperate and bank over-compliance credits for future periods.
