Emergency Contact Canada ratifies the Wreck Removal Convention Home Latest updates News Canada ratifies the Wreck Removal Convention 8 May 2019 Download Sign up for alerts Canada will become party to the Nairobi Convention on the Removal of Wrecks, 2007 ("the convention") effective 30 July 2019 (by way of agreement dated 1 May, 2019). This new insurance requirement stipulates that compulsory insurance for wreck removal is required for owners who operate vessels that: are 300 gross tonnage and above; and are registered in Canada, or that call at ports or terminals in Canada (including inland waterways, the territorial sea and exclusive economic zone). Furthermore, if you own a vessel that meets these criteria, you must also hold a Wreck Removal Convention Certificate showing proof of insurance. To apply for a Wreck Removal Convention Certificate(s), you will need to send Transport Canada the following: evidence of valid insurance coverage or another form of financial security (usually a "Blue Card" issued by a Protection and Indemnity (P&I) Club or other insurer); and a completed application form A bulletin has been issued by Transport Canada detailing the new insurance requirements for vessels under the convention.
