Belgium’s Jan De Nul has secured a contract to install 196 km of inter-array cables for the Nordlicht offshore wind farm project in Germany. The Nordlicht wind farm zone, located 85 km north of the island of Borkum in the German North Sea, consists of two separate sites – Nordlicht I, with an expected capacity of 980W, and Nordlicht II, with an expected capacity of 630MW. Jan De Nul will deploy its cable-laying vessel Connector for transport and installation works. Following this new contract with an undisclosed value, the company now has six subsea cable projects for offshore wind energy lined up in Germany. Swedish utility Vattenfall owns 51% of the Nordlicht project and is responsible for the development and construction of the sites, with German chemicals firm BASF as a key partner owning 49% of the projects. Pending a final investment decision, expected in 2025, offshore construction for Nordlicht 1 and 2 should begin in 2026, with full operational status anticipated by 2028.
