Normally, during periods of reduced transit capacity, a corresponding reduction in the number of available reserved transit slots is ordered by the Authority. During these periods, non-booked vessels may experience delays in transiting. Whenever a set of locks requires an outage of one of its two lanes, advantage may be taken by performing simultaneous work at other locks. Panama Canal First Quarter Fiscal Year Results Register Record Tonnage The Panama Canal registered a tonnage record of 87.7 million PC/UMS tons (Panama Canal Universal Measurement System) during the first quarter of Fiscal Year (FY) 2014. A 4.8% increase above the forecast with a total of 3,450 transits registered during this period. “These results reaffirm Panama Canal’s impact on international trade and its role of continuing to offer a reliable and competitive service to its customers,” Panama Canal Administrator Jorge L. Quijano said. The Panama Canal fiscal year runs from October 1 to September 30. The previous record was set during the first quarter of FY 2012, registering 86.2 million PC/UMS tons. The tonnage increase is mostly due to a good crop in the United States, which has led to strong grain cargo flows through the Panama C
