Norway has awarded NOK 208 million (US$22 million) to 11 port projects across the country. The investments aim to improve cargo flows, increase port capacity and strengthen connections between sea and land transport. The funding comes through Norway’s programme for efficient and environmentally friendly ports. The Norwegian Coastal Administration (Kystverket) manages the programme. Overall, the 11 projects represent investments of around NOK 492 million. Karmsund receives largest grant Karmsund Havn will receive the largest grant, at approximately NOK 61.4 million. The funding will support the construction of a new quay next to the container terminal at Husøy. The project aims to increase cargo-handling capacity and support more efficient freight movements through the port. Meanwhile, container infrastructure at Orkanger will also receive funding. Around NOK 4.9 million will support the expansion and upgrade of the container terminal area. Other projects include quay expansions, RoRo infrastructure, improved truck access and port digitalisation. Norway targets more efficient ports According to Kystverket, the programme supports projects that can improve transport flows and reduce waiting times. It also aims to strengthen ports as links between maritime and landside transport. “Efficient ports are a prerequisite for moving even more freight by sea,” said Sven Martin Tønnessen, Director of Transport, Ports and Fairways at Kystverket. In total, Kystverket received 21 applications requesting around NOK 400 million in funding. Following the assessment process, 11 projects were selected. The authorities considered their transport and logistics benefits, ability to be implemented and expected environmental impact. The funding programme was established in 2019. Its broader goal is to strengthen ports and support more efficient freight transport between sea and land.
