South Korean flagship HMM has announced the signing of contracts with Avikus to implement AI-based autonomous navigation solutions. This initiative includes a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and Avikus for joint research and technical collaboration. HMM plans to deploy autonomous navigation solutions across 40 vessels initially, with intentions to expand these applications fleet-wide based on performance outcomes. The primary goal of this initiative is to leverage actual operational data to boost the efficiency of autonomous navigation technologies while improving the overall competitiveness of HMM’s fleet. Through the MOU, HMM, HD Korea Shipbuilding, and Avikus will collaborate on advanced research to push the boundaries of AI technology in maritime operations. HMM will manage the deployment and provide essential operational data, while HD Korea Shipbuilding will supply vessel platforms and technical assistance. Avikus will focus on supplying and enhancing the autonomous navigation solutions. HMM is set to apply the HiNAS Control system, developed by Avikus, which integrates not only perception and judgment functions but also control capabilities.
