Maersk has launched operations at a new logistics centre in Herleshausen, Germany, expanding its contract logistics footprint in the country. The facility provides 71,800 square metres of logistics space and will serve as a central hub for cargo flows within Germany and neighbouring European markets. Inbound operations have been underway since August, while outbound operations have now started. New hub supports German and European distribution The facility is located at Panattoni Park Bad Hersfeld Ost in the state of Hessen. It sits directly alongside the A4 motorway, one of Germany’s main east-west transport corridors. The site includes 62,800 square metres of warehouse space, 2,900 square metres of offices and 6,100 square metres of mezzanine space. Goods stored at the facility are being distributed to German and other delivery centres of an online retailer. “Herleshausen is the ideal location as a central hub for the flow of goods within Germany and into the neighboring European markets,” said Ole Trumpfheller, Managing Director of Maersk Area Northern Europe Continent. “Within the strong growth of our Contract Logistics Business this is the next addition to our warehouse footprint in Germany and continues to support our Integrator focus.” Up to 1,000 employees during peak season The logistics centre currently employs 150 people, with additional recruitment underway. Once fully operational, Maersk expects the facility to provide between 300 and 400 permanent jobs. During the online retail peak season between October and December, the workforce could increase to as many as 1,000 employees. Maersk targets DGNB Gold certification The warehouse includes solar panels, a rainwater collection system and charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.
