Amendments to SOLAS will prohibit the use or carriage of fire-extinguishing media containing PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonic acid) from 1 January 2026. The ban applies to both new and existing ships and represents the first global maritime regulation targeting PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl) substances. Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) is a specific chemical within the broader family of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a large group of synthetic compounds valued for their oil- and water-repellent properties but linked to environmental persistence and potential health risks. PFOS has been targeted for global phase-out under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants due to its persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity.
