Image Credit: NorthStandard The Nuclear Energy Maritime Organisation (NEMO) has launched a task force to examine how international seafarer training standards could be adapted for future nuclear-powered commercial ships. Led by Mark Smith , director of decarbonisation at NorthStandard , the STCW Task Force is operating under NEMO's Maritime Regulations Working Group, NEMO said in a LinkedIn post yesterday. The group is reviewing how the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) may need to evolve as nuclear propulsion moves closer to commercial shipping. It is consulting maritime training institutions, reactor developers, shipowners, regulators and other industry experts to identify existing nuclear-related training, assess potential skills and competency gaps, and understand how training requirements may differ across reactor technologies. The task force is also examining the role of emergency preparedness and incident response training. NEMO is inviting interested organisations and individuals to participate in a planned roundtable discussion to help shape future training and certification frameworks for nuclear-powered shipping.
